I think the title says plenty. And the “he” referred to there is Ives Galarcep. I don’t think he’d post it if it wasn’t solid.
Seattle becomes Major League Soccer’s 15th team in 2009.
To think, just a short (exceedingly boring) drive from where I live…
Filed under: Major League Soccer, Seattle
Ahh, how can you call the drive past Chehalis boring? Hopefully Vancouver and Portland won’t be too far behind on this move, I’d love to see the northwestern rivalry flourish in the MLS.
OK, I’ll grant you the Centralia/Chehalis area – that amounts to the “Wednesday” of the trip between Seattle and Portland, i.e. the halfway hump.
The real problems come with the stretches from Vancouver, WA to Centralia/Chehalis, that dreary progression of nothing towns that are, essentially, parasites on the Interstate. Further north, the deadly, repetition of strip-malls between Fort Lewis and Tacoma presages driving in Hell: “Look Honey, ANOTHER Taco Bell. Didn’t we just pass one? Oh wait, there’s another. Say, that’s strange.”
Does Seattle have a stadium in the works? And what is the ownership situation? I’m in the dark about that as well. What does this say about the situation in St. Louis, which from what I’ve read and heard, was light years further along than anything else from anyother city. It can’t bode well for them or for getting the stadium built – it’s contingent on recieving a franchise – if MLS bypasses them for a city with no SSS plan, playing in a canaverous NFL building, on fake grass, with an iffy fan base. What exactly is MLS looking for, certainly can’t be what they say they’re looking for, I’m not sure Seattle has any of it on the horizion let alone in place.
Power to Seattle, hope they are successfull should this be true, but man, it’s got me scratching my head.
Apart from being happy about a team moving to my general area, I’m with you on this one Kelly. The St. Louis plan seems much further along and, to be direct about it, the overall set up – between proximity to KC and other teams like Columbus and Chicago – and tradition in the region makes St. Louis look like a better fit. If I had to guess what tilted MLS in Seattle’s direction, it would be breaking into a region where the league simply had no presence; it’s the national footprint thing…and that makes some sense.
Then again, I think St. Louis will be in there within the next round of expansions – e.g. the phase that takes the league to 18 teams (and, blissfully, keeps over 50% of MLS’s teams out of the post-season). The $64K question: who will the other two teams be? I think Philly will be one of them….the other one? I’m still hoping for Vegas first, and a second NY team, um, second.
So who gets the No. 16 if not St. Louis? Am I counting wrong here, SJ 14, Seattle 15, ????? 16? If St. Louis isn’t the next one I don’t see the stadium happening which of course would probably scuttle their bid (well more than it has been by the Seattle annoucement). The whole Collinsville deal is contingent on Cooper getting a franchise and with the timelines I’ve been reading, it would have to be within the next two seasons max. I’m just completely baffled about this. I understand the need to expand the footprint, especaially with TV (and Toronto doesn’t help, they’re not counted in the US markets) and the need to balance out some of the travel. They’ve been hyper-hyping Philly, they’ve been pipe-dreaming NYII and they have about as much in place as Seattle. Besides which either of those two just skew the divisions yet again.
I’m not bagging on the town, like I said, power to them and good for you to have a nearby team, but I cannot get my head around this and I’m wondering what the criteria really is for getting a franchise granted. Sheesh.
