This Week In La Liga—Week 1

I apologize first of all for not getting all of the La Liga previews up, it has been a busy week for me and I take a lot of time doing the research about the teams.  I’ll get the rest of them done this week for everyone to look at.

It’s like Christmas for me as the first week of La Liga is here, and more importantly for me, I get to watch the Sevilla-Getafe game today with three of my friends from Spain who are here to visit.  So to me, it doesn’t get much better than this, I have to say.

Let’s take a look at what is in store in La Liga this week.  Home team is always first.

Real Madrid-Athletico Madrid
2:00pm EST

The first week of La Liga and we are already treated to a Madrid Derby.  This game will be interesting as it pits the mighty defending champs, Real Madrid who have done their fair share of stocking up this summer against a Torres-less Atletico squad who are hoping striker Diego Forlán will ease the pain this season.   The question will be if Schuster can adapt to his new surroundings in Madrid and appease the fans, who will be calling for his resignation if he does not preform this season.

Prediction:  Real Madrid 2-Atlético 1

Real Murcia- Zaragoza
2:00 EST

Newly promoted side Real Murcia looks to make some waves in La Liga this season with a home fixture against Real Zaragoza.  Murcia, toting 11 new players into this season, are under the gun to preform as one of the newcomers in La Liga.  Real Zaragoza, after a 6th place finish and a birth into the UEFA cup, are looking to move up the table to a Champions League spot this season.   Zaragoza looks lost after Diego Milito and his 23 goals went to Barcelona.

Prediction: Real Murcia 0-Zaragoza 2

Sevilla FC-Getafe
2:00 EST

A rematch of the Copa del Rey final, Getafe look to get their revenge against the Sevillistas, who are the current holders of the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, Copa Del Rey and Spanish Super Cup.  Sevilla has a rough week ahead of them as they play today against Getafe, Tuesday in the Champions League, and Friday against Milan in the European Super Cup.  We will see if Juande Ramos will rest some of the Sevilla players in anticipation of the Tuesday game.

Getafe is coming off of a 8th place finish and is the third club in Madrid.  They have an improved team over last season and will be a force this season.

Prediction:  Sevilla FC 2-Getafe 1

Domingo (Sunday for those non spanish speakers)

Athletic Bilbao-Osasuna
1:00pm EST

Athletic Bilbao can’t go any farther down in the table this season as they fought off relegation in the last game of last season.  Joaquin Caparros comes over from Deportivo and the Basques look to him to revitalize the failing Athletic squad.  Athletic will need some goals this season, as they can’t rely on only 2 players, Aduriz and Llorente, to provide upfront.

Osasuna finished in 14th place last season on 46 points.  Their leading scorer, Soldado, went back to Madrid this summer which leaves Osasuna with a huge hole upfront. Their next leading goal scorer Valmiro Lopez Rocha, had only 6 goals last season.   Will they be able to find the back of the net?

Prediction:  Athletic 0-Osasuna 0
