La Liga: Getafe Advance to 2nd Straignt Copa del Rey Final

Getafe, the little club that could, earned their 2nd consecutive spot in the Copa del Rey final with a 1-1 draw against Racing Santander Wednesday night.  Getafe advance to the final under first year head coach Michael Laudrup.

The 1-1 draw puts Getafe through 4-2 on aggregate.  El Geta now wait for the winner of the Valencia v Barcelona match to be played Thursday at 3:30pm.

The game wasn’t played without a bit of controversy however.  With Getafe down 1-0 Uche made a hard challenge against Garay, which sent the Racing player to the ground.  Uche appeared to plead for his teammates to play the ball out of bounds but to no avail.  Getafe continued with the play, and Albín passed the ball to Casquero who in turn scored.

Racing players were livid and went in search of an answer for not playing the ball out of bounds.  With Getafe simply giving shoulder-shurgs, Racing preceded to give Getafe a rough last 10 minutes, flying in with some terribly late and rough challenges, which saw Serrano sent off (but this was before the goal).  It’s a wonder that all of the Getafe players escaped without any injury.

Now the little team from outside Madrid will wait until tomorrow.  See a preview for Barcelona here at The Offside Barcelona (props to my friend Isaiah).

La Liga: Another One Bites The Dust

Notice who is missing from the above quarterfinals in the Copa del Rey?

Already proclaimed La Liga champs Real Madrid were knocked out today by lowly Mallorca with a 1-0 loss at the Bernabeu.

Apparently 25 points separating the first place madridistas from the 13th place barralets. That didn’t stop an Ibagaza goal in the 83rd minute from spoiling the treble and a supposed 900,000 Euro bonus from Vincente Calderón from bringing home the Copa del Rey, Champions League and La Liga titles this season.

To say Mallorca ‘parked the bus’ today is a slight understatement, as a super-ultra-almost sickening-defensive Mallorca took to the field against a depleted Real Madrid squad, starting countrymen Jerzy Dudek in goal. Madrid dominated the game as Mallorca only were playing to not concede.

The Man of the Match was Mallorca keeper Moyá, who was absolutly fabulous in goal today. What a game he had.

The quarterfinals are set to begin on the 23rd of January and finish up on the 30th.

The rest of today’s results are:

2 – 1 MALLORCA – R. MADRID 1 – 0
3 – 0 GETAFE – LEVANTE 1 – 0
1 – 1 ZARAGOZA – RACING 2 – 4
1 – 2 BETIS – VALENCIA 1 – 2

La Liga: Sevilla Dethrowned as Barca Moves On

It’s been a tough year for Sevilla, and it’s just getting tougher now as the rojiblancos find themselves out of the Copa del Rey with a 0-0 draw today at the Camp Nou.  The draw puts Barcelona through with a 1-1 draw previously at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

The game was not worthy of the two teams in it.  It’s obvious that I’m a Sevilla supporter, but the referee’s for this Copa del Rey series were absolutly terrible.  I’m not one to complain about the ref’s, but seriously, this series took the cake.  It was enough to make my head spin, for both teams.

Sitting in front of my Arabic feed I was disgusted time and time again at the lack of calls for both sides.  I spare everyone from going into a epic rant about refereeing but as I previously said, it went both ways.

Tomorrow’s Copa del Rey games are:

Ida Partido Vuelta
09/01/2008 16/01/2008
0-0 Atlético – Valladolid Previa
2-1 Mallorca – R. Madrid Previa
3-0 Getafe – Levante Previa
1-0 Recreativo – Villarreal Previa
1-1 Athletic – Espanyol Previa
1-1 Sevilla – Barcelona 0-0
1-1 Zaragoza – Racing Previa
1-2 Betis – Valencia Previa

Your biggest game tomorrow is the Mallorca-Real Madrid clash at the Bernabeu.  Real Madrid are currently trailing 2 goals to 1, but only need a 1-0 win as Madrid would go through with the advantage in Away goals.
